Caritas

HISTORY OF COMMISION

Caritas is the Socio-Economic Development Commission of the Diocese of Machakos. It is one of the commissions/departments in the Bishop’s Office.
The term Caritas is a Latin word meaning Love of God for Humanity. It expresses Charity, compassion, Cooperation and Peace among God’s people.
The exercise of charity (Caritas) in the church is as old as the church itself (Ref. Acts 6:2-3).

Caritas draws its inspiration from the Holy Scriptures and the Social Teachings of the Church. In Machakos Diocese, Caritas is the department which facilitates resources mobilization and implementation of community development and relief projects.

MISSION STATEMENT / TARGETS OF THE COMMISION:

The mission of Caritas Machakos is to enhance capability of the poor and marginalized communities to live Just and Descent lives.

TASKS OR ACTIVITIES UNDER THE COMMISION:

Caritas Machakos facilitates implementation and promotion of food security projects, access to clean water, environmental conservation, capacity building for quality leadership and relief in times of natural calamities like drought, floods or other.
Caritas specializes in promotion of dry lands farming, conservation, agriculture, boreholes, sand dams, promoting micro-credit groups, tree planting and quality leadership training.

Among the main already completed projects are as follows:

St. Johns Kangii Community Borehole in Mwala Sub-County.
Kikumini Parish community Borehole in Kikumini – Nzaui Sub-County.
Kibwezi Parish community Borehole in Kibwezi Sub-County.
Katothya Earth Dam in Katangi Parish – Katangi Division.
Kithyoko Small Home in Yatta.
Kikumini Small Home in Masinga.
SHG & SILC groups in Yata, Kako and Mbuvo respectively.
The Katangi farm demonstration.
The sand dams of Kwa Sofia, Utithi Mbulutini and Mbulutini – Mtito Andei Division.
The Cathedral CBHC children project.
