Health & Medical

HISTORY OF COMMISION:

Since this commission started, it has had 5 health coordinators to date. It started in the mid 70s Geraldine Huising from Holland who was working under KCS the now KCCB. By then there were less than 10 health facilities. At the moment we have 29 functioning health facilities among them 2 hospitals and 2 health centre.

MISSION STATEMENT / TARGETS OF THE COMMISION:

To professionally cater for health needs of all God’s people in Machakos diocese and beyond guided by the social teachings of the Catholic Church.

TASKS OR ACTIVITIES UNDER THE COMMISION:

The main function of the health commission is;
-To coordinating health activities in the Diocese, giving oversight and supervision
-Facilitating collaboration between all health stakeholders and the Diocese, including lobbying for assistance where possible.
-Play an advisory role on health matters, including recruitment of health staff in the diocesan facilities.
-A link between facilities and the KCCB health office, the County and National health network.

SANCTIONED EVENTS UNDER COMMSION: (DATES & ACTIVITIES)

At the facility level;
The health facilities are committed to offer affordable, timely, efficient, and give quality health care to our communities without discrimination of religion and class. This is in line with Jesus’ ministry of healing Mark 3:10. This is done in great faith Mark 3:5. Healing as a ministry started by Christ himself is the core value of this commission. Our joy to see people of God full of life John 10:10 “I came that they may life and have it in full”
In this light, Bishop Kioko Hospital offers a free hand and foot corrective surgeries for free. This is an annual event marked by a charity and screening of patients. We always appreciate support from partners to facilitate the activity.

PROJECTS COMPLETED, ONGOING OR IN FUTURE:

Currently we have programmes that are continuing and the major program in most facilities is the BOP (the Base Of Pyramid). This is a program for managing diabetes at the grassroots without having to refer all the patients.
The second is HHA (Health Heart Africa). It is similar to BOP but this is about promoting a community with controlled blood pressure for health hearts and health lives.
All the community based health care projects have several projects running.
Otherwise, we offer preventive, curative and promotive health services continuously.
